From The Five Pillars

Jump to: navigation, search

Every hero has a few abilities which become available from a certain level. For your hero to level up he needs to gain experience, heroes gain a little experience every turn so this comes with time.

Abilities have their own levels determining how powerful their effect will be, so if you have a level 16 hero with an ability that became available at level 9 this ability will be level 8.

There are two main types of heroes:

Battle heroes will use their abilities at the start of a battle giving the enemy certain disadvantages or your own troops advantages just like spells would. But be advised, almost all effects can be resisted (these off the Neutral Heroes can't be resisted.)
Other heroes cannot be killed since they don't enter battle, you can only lose them by dismissing them or if you can't pay their upkeep. These heroes obviously also don't help you in battle but by other means.

Battle heroes will go into battle together with your units. One hero will command the first stack, the second the second stack, etc... If there are no more free stacks the next hero will join the command of your first stack, this with a maximum of 2,5 heroes per stack. There is no rule that says that your most experienced hero will command the first stack, this is at random.
A hero will fight alongside your stack and in fact is the first to attack the enemy, as he/she should offcourse. If your stack is wiped out later on, the hero does have a big chance to perish with his troops. If, in the process of destroying the stack, enough additional damage is done to take away all the hero's HP, it dies. Otherwise, it will escape and stay alive under your control.

You obviously can have more than one hero, but only one hero of each kind. Should you get more than one hero of the same kind, a fight to the death will be fought and the more experienced will remain.

To quote starlord: Hero abilities have to pass the same magic resistances as spells. So yes, ultimates and complex units resisting them is quite natural. The use is that, even though some will be resisted, others will pass through and boost your units. It gives medium and simple units an advantage and a disadvantage as they are more prone to be affected by both your heros' abilties as well as those of your enemy's heros. It also means you should pick heroes according to the units you use, so that your units have relatively low resistances to the hero's you use.
