The game is using a technique called turns to represent time. For each turn you use, time passes and your land generate taxes, mana and your population grows. The turns can be used to many things, like researching magic, attacking enemies, search for land and many other things. How you use these turns is entriely up to each player.

For each turn you take a report is posted on the turn info page, here you can view how your income is, and what happens to your country.

The entire game The Five Pillars is based on turns, it is your main resource. Almost everything costs a certain amount of turns to do.

Every x minutes you gain one turn in which x differs per server.

Jumpstart Server: 7
Normal server: 6
Hardcore server: 5
Renaissance server: 7
Freshman server: 5

To prevent people saving turns from weeks at very low power where almost no attacks occur to then in one go rise into the top everyone has a turnpool which gets filled by the turns (s)he gains, basically this just indicates your maximum number of turns per server:

Jumpstart server: 200 (220)
Normal server: 230 (240)
Hardcore server: 200 (270)
Renaissance server: 200 (240) Freshman server: 250 (250)

Your turn pool will increase slightly when you get luckbringer or donate to the game. The amount is represented by the parenthesized number.
